What is the best time to workout? Morning, noon, or evening?
Now this is a tricky question because the answer is based on many variables.
What time is the body best suited for physical activity?

  • Physical performance is usually best, and the risk of injury least, from about 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Muscle strength peaks between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Lungs function is 17% more efficiently at around 5 p.m.
  • In the first three hours after we wake up, our blood pressure rises the most out of any point in the day.
  • Blood vessels open up more later in the day to allow for blood flow which is great for exercising.
  • There is a natural drop in blood pressure later in the day as well.
  • Exercising in the morning was found to either increase blood pressure or not make a difference at all. But in the evening exercise was found to reduce blood pressure by 10–11%.
  • Pretty much every world record in track-and-field and cycling has been broken in the afternoon or evening.”

So far based on this evidence it would appear that working out later in the day would be more effective. But there is more to consider.
What time is the mind best suited for physical activity?

  • Early morning exercise increases all those neurotransmitters, and growth factors that help you get the results you desire.
  • Starting your day with a morning workout will produce an endorphin boost which helps you with the rest of your day. Not to mention it will also will also set your appetite, so you’ll be more likely eat well the rest of the day.
  • You will have more confidence knowing you already accomplished a major goal of the day.
  • You will have more energy for your tasks ahead later in the day.
  • Exercise can affect melatonin levels, which need to increase for proper sleep patterns.Exercising later in the day may reduce melatonin levels and can even affect melatonin levels the following night.
  • Working out earlier in the day also provides mental relief because the thought of working out later can be stressful especially if you have a tough workout coming up. Working out early you get it "over-with".
So far based on this evidence it would appear that working out earlier in the day would be more effective. But there is more to consider.
What time fits your schedule to workout?

  • When does your work schedule allow you the time for exercise?
  • When does your family life and commitments allow you time?
  • What about travel times to and from the gym?
  • All these are questions that you need to consider when figuring out what time is best for you.

The Conclusion:

"The Ultimate Question" is when WILL you workout. Working out only produces results when you actually do it. Don't pick a schedule that you can't maintain. You need to make your fitness journey a priority without making it an obsession. Keep the rest of your life in good balance, GOD, Family, Work, Fitness. You will need to adapt to different times to keep your fitness goals alive.

That being said when push comes to shove and you weigh all the facts the scales tip to working out later in the day, but only if your schedule allows.
