To understand why recovery is so vital to muscle growth we need to understand how muscle growth actually happens.
In order to have any muscular growth you need to first break down the muscle. For muscle breakdown occur you must force your muscles to adapt by creating stress that is different than the previous threshold your body has already adapted to. This is can be done by lifting heavier weights. Changing your exercise routine to keep the muscle guessing also will help you break down more muscle fiber. Going to failure will help speed up muscle breakdown as well.
Once muscle break down occurs after sufficient recovery time your body repairs or replaces damaged muscle fibers through a process where it fuses muscle fibers together to form new muscle protein strands called myofibrils. These repaired myofibrils increase in thickness and number to create muscle growth this is call hypertrophy. Muscle growth happens whenever the rate of muscle protein absorption is greater than the rate of muscle protein breakdown.
The amount of time that a muscle has to grow after sufficient breakdown is about 24-48 hours; so any meals eaten and rest of the affected muscles in that timeframe will determine the impact on muscle growth.
If you do not provide the muscle with enough rest or nutrition, you can actually reverse this process and put your muscle into a catabolic or broken down state. That causes loss of muscle mass.
The Conclusion:
Recovery time and proper nutrition are equally as important as a good workout routine. In fact without proper recovery achieving your fitness goals would be impossible.
